Maternity gown Type 1

Maternity gown Type 1

Maternity Gown Type 1 (classified as an AAMI Level 1 Healthcare Gown) is a light-duty protective garment designed for minimal fluid exposure. In maternity and obstetric settings, these gowns are the "first line" of hygiene, providing a basic barrier against dry particulates and very light splashing. They are primarily used for general ward tasks where there is no expectation of significant blood or amniotic fluid contact.

Manufactured from Spunbond Polypropylene (SPP), Type 1 gowns are exceptionally lightweight and breathable. Because they are designed for low-risk environments, they do not have the heavy laminates or reinforcements found in higher-level surgical gowns, making them the most cost-effective and comfortable option for routine clinical interactions.

Uses

The Type 1 Maternity Gown is used for routine observations and low-risk patient contact.

  • Admission and Triage: Worn during the initial intake of patients for history taking and basic vital sign checks.

  • Routine Prenatal Checkups: Providing a barrier during non-invasive procedures like abdominal palpation or external fetal monitoring.

  • Patient Transport: Worn by staff while transferring mothers between wards or to the ultrasound department.

  • Visitor Protection: Often provided to partners or family members entering neonatal areas to maintain a clean environment.

Features

Designed for maximum breathability and ease of movement, these gowns focus on basic hygiene.

  • High Breathability: The single-layer polypropylene construction prevents heat buildup, which is ideal for high-traffic hospital wards.

  • Light Fluid Repellency: While not waterproof, the fabric has a natural surface tension that causes tiny droplets of water to bead off.

  • Universal Fit: Usually designed with a generous cut and simple ties to accommodate various body types and allow for quick donning over clothes or scrubs.

  • Elastic Cuffs: Simple elastic wristbands ensure the sleeves remain secure during routine tasks.

Applications

Used in outpatient maternity services and general recovery areas.

  • Prenatal and Postnatal Outpatient Clinics.

  • Low-risk maternity observation wards.

  • Hospital reception and triage areas.

  • Neonatal "Step-down" units (where babies are stable).

Disclaimer

Type 1 gowns provide the lowest level of fluid protection and should be used accordingly.

  • No Fluid Barrier: These gowns will soak through quickly if exposed to blood, urine, or amniotic fluid. They should never be used during active delivery or for wound care.

  • Non-Sterile: These are intended for "clean" rather than "sterile" procedures.

  • Infection Control: Even though the risk is low, these are single-use items and must be disposed of after each patient interaction to prevent the spread of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs).
