Maternity gown Type 2

Maternity gown Type 2

Maternity Gown Type 2 (classified as an AAMI Level 2 Healthcare Gown) is a protective garment designed for low-to-moderate fluid exposure. In maternity and obstetric settings, Type 2 gowns are used for routine care where the risk of heavy splashing or pressurized fluid is low, but a reliable barrier is still required for basic hygiene and infection control.

Manufactured from standard-weight SMS (Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond) or spunbond polypropylene, these gowns provide a barrier against water penetration (measured by impact penetration) but are not intended for high-pressure surgical environments. They are lightweight and highly breathable, making them comfortable for staff during long shifts in the labor ward.

Uses

The Type 2 Maternity Gown is primarily used for non-surgical obstetric tasks and patient monitoring.

  • Routine Labor Monitoring: Worn by nurses or midwives during regular check-ins and fetal heart rate monitoring.

  • Early-Stage Labor Support: Providing a barrier during the initial stages of labor when fluid volumes are minimal.

  • Postpartum Care: Worn during the cleaning and handling of the newborn or while assisting the mother with initial breastfeeding.

  • Nursery and NICU Access: Standard protective wear for staff entering neonatal units to maintain a clean environment.

Features

Designed for comfort and ease of use, these gowns focus on basic fluid repellency.

  • Full-Length Coverage: Provides protection for the torso and arms, usually ending at the knees.

  • Breathable Non-Woven Fabric: Allows for air circulation, which is essential in the often warm environment of a labor and delivery suite.

  • Elasticated or Knitted Cuffs: Ensures the sleeves stay in place and fit snugly under examination gloves.

  • Overlapping Back: Designed to provide full coverage of the wearer's back, usually secured with simple ties at the neck and waist.

Applications

Used in maternity clinics and general obstetric wards.

  • Antenatal (Prenatal) Clinics.

  • Post-Anesthesia Care Units (PACU) for maternity.

  • Newborn nurseries and stabilized Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU).

  • Triage areas within maternity hospitals.

Disclaimer

Type 2 gowns are not suitable for high-fluid or surgical procedures.

  • Fluid Limitations: This gown is not recommended for active delivery (Stage 2 of labor) or C-sections, as it may soak through if exposed to large volumes of blood or amniotic fluid.

  • Non-Sterile: Most Type 2 gowns are supplied as "Clean/Non-Sterile" and are not intended for use in an operating theater sterile field.

  • Single-Use: These are disposable items and must be discarded after contact with a single patient to prevent cross-contamination.
