Maternity gown Type 3

Maternity gown Type 3

Maternity Gown Type 3 (often classified as an AAMI Level 3 Surgical Gown for Obstetrics) is a high-performance protective garment designed for moderate-to-high fluid exposure. In the maternity ward, "Type 3" refers to a gown that provides a robust liquid barrier, specifically tested to resist liquid penetration under pressure (hydrostatic pressure), making it ideal for standard labor and delivery procedures.

Manufactured from Reinforced SMS (Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond) fabric, these gowns feature extra layers of protective material in the "critical zones"—the forearms and the chest area. This design balances the need for high-level fluid resistance with breathability, ensuring the clinician remains cool during long labors.

Uses

The Type 3 Maternity Gown is the "workhorse" of the delivery room, used when significant fluid contact is expected but not at high-pressure spray levels.

  • Standard Vaginal Deliveries: Protecting the midwife or obstetrician from amniotic fluid, blood, and saline.

  • Epidural Administration: Providing a sterile field while the anesthesiologist performs spinal or epidural blocks.

  • Assisted Deliveries: Used during vacuum or forceps-assisted births where fluid splashes are common.

  • Obstetric Exams: High-level protection during rupture of membranes (ARM) or internal examinations.

Features

Designed for the specific ergonomics of obstetric care, these gowns emphasize freedom of movement and targeted protection.

  • Reinforced Chest and Sleeves: Added poly-coated or ultra-thick SMS layers in areas most vulnerable to soaking.

  • Low-Linting Material: Reduces the risk of fibers entering the sterile field or the patient's surgical site.

  • Knitted Comfort Cuffs: Provides a secure, comfortable seal at the wrist to prevent fluids from entering the sleeves.

  • Hook-and-Loop Neck Closure: Allows for easy adjustment and a secure fit around the neck to prevent "gaping."

Applications

Commonly found in maternity hospitals and surgical units.

  • Labor and Delivery Suites (L&D).

  • Postpartum recovery units (for minor surgical repairs/suturing).

  • Antenatal high-dependency units.

  • Specialized midwifery centers.

Disclaimer

While highly protective, Type 3 gowns have specific limits regarding fluid volume and pressure.

  • Pressure Limits: For high-volume hemorrhages or emergency C-sections involving significant arterial spray, a Type 4 (Level 4) gown is recommended for its total viral barrier.

  • Sterility Maintenance: Once the gown is donned, the back is generally considered non-sterile. Proper "scrub" technique must be maintained.

  • Disposal: Because these gowns are often saturated with biological fluids, they must be disposed of in a "Biohazard" red bag according to hospital protocol.
